Jan. 8
1937: Milt. goes to school tonight.
I met Dot S___ after work and we had supper at Hoi Sai Gai and then we went to the Oriental Theatre where we saw “Hideaway Girl” with Martha Raye and Sophie Tucker in person on the stage.
Came right home in the hope that Milt. would be there, but he called to say he had to work at the club & wouldn’t be home until later.
I got to bed quite early (11:30) for a change.
1939: Got up quite early and made breakfast.
Milt. went to play billiards with Swede.
Ruth stayed for dinner and it was a help to have her amuse L. while I prepared chicken, etc.
After dinner dishes were over, L. went to bed and Ruth and Milt. went home to S___s from where Milt. was going to the Art Institute.
I had just settled down to rest and read the paper when Harry and Martha came over.
I invited them to stay for supper. Harry picked Milt. up at his mother’s and they brought back home made potato salad & moodle salad and we had quite a nice Sunday supper.
After L. went to bed we played bridge and the girls took the boys down the line.
After they left, Milt. & I continued our Chinese Checkers feud.
1940: Walked over to mother’s this morning with Lloyd to help her bake an angel food cake for tomorrow.
Got home about 3:00 and baked a devils food cake.
After supper, my brother brought the angel food over and he and Milton went over to the drug store and then came back & talked awhile.
2013: Tired! Elvis’ date of birth.

Jan. 7
1937: Came home and started to do last night’s dishes.
Milt. had to work late & so did Lil so Freddie and I went (in pouring rain) to meet Lil at Milwaukee Ave. & Cicero and then on to Edna & Harold’s. Dot & Gene were there also and the boy had a lot of fun playing with Harold Jr’s Xmas toys.
Had coffee & refreshments and went home in a cab.
1939: Got up rather late and after breakfast Milt. decided to take down the Xmas tree and said I could go to the Square and get a new dress if I wanted to. I went to Billy Stone first and got a girdle. What a day for bargains. I got a $10.00 girdle for $8.00. Then got a $6.95 dress for $4.95. Then got a hat and veil for $1.74. Some luck!
Got home at 12:15 and found that Milt. had cleaned up almost the entire house. I made lunch & then he did the shopping.
After supper, Ruth came over to take care of Lloyd.
I took a bath & wasn’t nearly dressed when Vic, Lewis, Ruth & Ray came to pick us up. They played with Lloyd who was enjoying his first day up and around.
Then we all went to Al & Win’s. where we spent a lovely evening playing bridge. Milt. & Ruth won prizes.
We got home at a reasonable hour & felt swell….
1940: Mrs. S___ and Ruth went out today and Milt. & I spent the afternoon together for a little while. He went out for a while but got back early.
Bob and Anne came over for a waffle supper and afterwards we played bridge until 11:30.
 Milt. took down the tree.
2013: More with the 10,000 pound beast. It’s like the cats – there are moments where I believe I am in charge, but really, I am fooling myself. I am merely one multi-faceted, multi-plugged-in cog among all its gears, wheels, cams and such, that must do my job to keep it running. Good workout too.
Jan. 6
1937: Got out at 4:30 to hurry home & clean up the house before Bob & Katherine, Victor & Lewis, Al & Winona came over.
 Played bridge.
Winona won first prize and Vic won the others.
Had fruit salad, whipped cream, cake and coffee.
 Got to bed late.
1939: Dear Diary,
 My last day at work.
Margie, Milt. & I went to the Normandy House for lunch to celebrate.
Milt. & I went home together and played Chinese Checkers in the evening.
 Got to bed late.
1940: Milt. went down to work for a couple of hours today.
Mrs. S. & Ruth went out as usual.
I did the shopping and then had a bath, etc.
Got dressed & dressed Lloyd and walked over to Carrie & George’s.
 Played Bridge & Poker.
 George drove us home.
2013: Spent the day inside, in my pajamas. Listened to a lot of public radio, learning about a city in Honduras that was quasi-designed by an American academic (an economist), that China is cloning trees such that they grow ten times faster than normal trees do and that that country is buying as much of the world’s recycled paper as it can (to make more paper), that children (which means all of us) actually have innate skills for forming language/communicating. Wowee. I think we are all really children at play in the fields of . . . what? The timeline of humanity? The timeline of this ecosystem called planet earth? The timeline of the universe? All of the above? None of the above?
On another note, I am observing that the phrase ‘dropping like flies’ comes from the reality that flies do just drop dead, mid-flight and out of the ether.

Just a quiet evening at home.
 Got to bed fairly early.
1940: This proved to be my last day at work and I was sure sorry although my total earnings for nine days amounted to $36.00.
Milt. had to work later so I came home alone.
Played with Lloyd until bedtime & then turned in myself.
2013: A rather exhausting start to the year. Very tired.
Jan. 4
1937: Milt. went to school tonight and I hurried home and made myself something to eat.
Lil came over and we talked for about an hour.
When Milt. got home we went right to bed.
1939: Dear Diary,
Well, today finished the inventory & I sure am glad that’s over altho I enjoyed the work very much and hope they find something else to do for the next couple of days.
I went home & spent the evening getting ready for tomorrow.
1940: Worked again today.
Al & Winona were supposed to come over tonight but the boy had to work late so they didn’t come.
2013:  Nothing like fully engaging the mind and body to remind yourself you are in fact, alive. Started learning a new skill today, using this 10,000 pound beast.
Jan. 3
1937: Got up early as it was so darn cold in here. I couldn’t sleep.
Milt. had to go to work today.
